commissioned by the Rabobank Leiden & Oegstgeest
winner of the Rabobank Cultural Award 1998

In 1998 we were invited by the Rabobank art committee to enter the first edition of their yearly "Cultuurprijs". The challenge was to design a sculpture for the entrance to the newly built head office. The bank wanted a sculpture that reflected their cooperative structure as well as the urban environment the bank operated in. Simultaneously, the committee members preferred something with a human touch, with something their customers could easily identify with.

We proposed a construction consisting of 20 individual 'houses' made of cedar wood and suspended from the ceiling in two full circles. Each house sports a number of 'windows', mounted with cibachromes showing everyday people doing everyday things. The cibachromes are backlit by a small light source suspended inside the houses. We carefully composed sets of cibachromes for each house, giving each a separate identity. Source material for the cibachromes was drawn from our huge slide collection of amateur snapshots. The slides were reproduced in the same way we found them. Meaning: with the specific color casts of certain film brands, with optical errors, with blur, flare and other typical errors of the amateur photographer. It took us quite some time to convince the photo lab that we did not want the originals to be (color) corrected or 'upgraded' in any other way! That would have destroyed the charming and homey feel of these images.

Needless to say, our proposal won (or else you wouldn't be seeing it here). The resulting sculptural piece is a large yet airy construction, offering 144 opportunities to look at something while waiting for your appointment with your account manager. You can step inside the circle and leisurely study all the scenes from different perspectives. Chances are you will discover some new detail every time you visit the bank. Or you can bump your head, when you enter the bank in a hurry and you're not watching were you're going!

Update: The Rabobank Cultural Award has ceased to exist as of 2004 and is now replaced by another interesting initiative, the Rabobank Wensenfonds
